The Gloucester Education Association is a local of the Virginia Education Association. The VEA is Virginia's largest educator union and is 40,000 members strong. As a local of the VEA, GEA is proud to be a democratic, rank and file union that represents all education workers from custodians to librarians and everyone in between. All GCPS employees are welcome to join.
What do we do?
GEA is a union. Therefore, our mission is simple: we endeavor to bring all workers in the school system together to act as one voice, standing up for the welfare of the workers, and protecting ourselves from unfair treatment in the workplace. In a perfect world, our educators would not need a union. However, because Virginia is ranked dead last in the nation for worker rights, because our schools are chronically underfunded, and because our education workers are grossly underpaid and under-appreciated, the GEA is an absolute necessity. Ultimately, GEA will continue to fight for its members until all GCPS employees gain proper compensation, our community fully funds schools, and our workers secure the labor rights that they deserve.
From individual school buildings to Richmond's capitol square, GEA will show up and fight for a brighter future for students and public school employees in Gloucester and beyond. (Photo: VEA Lobby Day 2020)
Virginia's education workers have been historically mistreated in the workplace and marginalized in our communities. Our elected officials have created this crisis through chronically and deliberately underfunding our schools, creating a school culture obsessed with standardized tests, and diminishing school employees by refusing to compensate them appropriately. To add to this dismal situation, school leaders and elected officials refuse to grant educators the most basic union rights. GEA and VEA are here to change all of that.
